Mikael Borglund is one of Australia’s most highly regarded film and television executives.
A founding director of Beyond International in 1984, Mikael was appointed Managing Director of the Beyond International Limited Group of companies in 1991 (listed on the ASX). Over the course of the next 4 decades, the company expanded to be one of the most prolific creators of film and television with early titles including Beyond 2000 and its international iteration Beyond Tomorrow, Jack Thompson Down Under, The Great Wall of Iron, Bright Sparks, Chances, Stingers, Halifax f.p., Good Guys/Bad Guys, Day of The Roses, Medivac, Through My Eyes and Fire. More recent television credits include Mythbusters, Pooch Perfect, Selling Houses Australia, Love It or List It Australia, My Lottery Dream Home and Back in the Groove as well as dramas Halifax: Retribution, two seasons of Troppo, and the highly anticipated new drama The Family Next Door. Beyond also co-produced the Emmy award-winning music based animated series Beat Bugs and Motown Magic, both for Netflix.
Within the last 12 months, the company has also produced Great Australian Concerts with Diesel, the special event television docu-feature Cold Chisel: The Big Five-0 and the 2025 Australian coverage of Eurovision.
Over a stellar career spanning forty years to date, Mikael’s feature films credits include The Crossing, Spotswood, Hammers Over the Anvil, Shotgun Wedding, The Girl Who Came Late, Kiss or Kill, Lantana, and James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D, as well as having managed the international distribution of the celebrated features Strictly Ballroom and Chopper. Most recently Mikael was Executive Producer of the documentary features The Musical Mind, the multi award winning John Farnham: Finding the Voice, and Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line (which was the opening night film of the 2024 Sydney Film Festival), as well as Russell Crowe’s Poker Face.
Following the sale of Beyond International Limited group of companies to Banijay in 2022, in December 2023 Mikael bought back the production divisions of the company to re-establish Beyond as a major independent producer of film and television in Australia and North America.
Mikael is a Director of South Sydney District Football Club (Souths), the Sony Foundation, Chairman of the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, and is a former Director of the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA), and the Australian Film Institute. Mikael is a chartered accountant and has been a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand for over 40 years.
